Elsa Silva, is a neonatal and pediatric nurse at Faro Hospital since 1993. Since 1998 she has worked in the Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, a level III unit. She was certified as a NIDCAP Professional in 2010 (trained by Inga Warren) and she is currently a NIDCAP Trainer-in-training with Dr. Nikk Conneman from the NIDCAP Sophia Training Center & APIB Training Center, Rotterdam. Elsa is responsible for the implementation of the NIDCAP program in the hospital.
She is also currently enrolled in a Masters Degree in Health Care Management program at the Algarve University and is a massage instructor, certified by the Portuguese Association of Infant Massage in 1996.
Elsa collaborates with EFCNI (European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants) on the project “European Standards for the Care of the Newborn Health” (www.efcni.org) in the Working Group for Care and Procedures. In addition, she coordinated a national Group for the Reformulation of Quality Standards for Children, Adolescent and Families Nursing Care. She also
participated in the national work group about Light and Noise National Standards in the NICU, released by the Neonatology Portuguese Society.
Elsa is Co-Founder and board member of Nascer Prematuro –Portuguese Premature Babies Parents Association.
Throughout her career she developed special skills at the bedside with babies and their families, integrating NIDCAP philosophy into practice, always searching for the best way to provide care for the baby and family. She has shared her vision, experience, skills and concerns around newborn care at many national and international talks and meetings that raise awareness for a more baby friendly approach using the NIDCAP philosophy. Her extensive experience as a nurse caring for babies and families helped her to be extremely sensitive and aware of the implications of being a premature, ill baby in the NICU, shaping the way she cares for babies and families.
